The principal of Quest Leadership Services is Gary L. Johnson  

Gary is a seasoned entrepreneur with a successful track record in strategic planning and business management. Warm and Charismatic, he is a hands-on leader with exceptional people and communication skills.

Gary has an extensive background in all three Spheres of Sustainability.

Within the Energy & Environmental Sphere, Gary's experience spans from the technical to the strategic in both local and international venues.  It includes research into, monitoring of and advanced simulations of energy use in institutional and commercial buildings, managing the development of major energy accounting systems, and development and authoring of strategic plans related to Sustainability and Energy Management Policy.  Fully conversant with energy related design and rehabilitation, Gary is a frequent speaker on topics related to energy and environmental sustainability. This includes presentations to delegates at the UN, through to speaking and workshop tours in south-east Asia.  He has designed and delivered training programs in Energy Management to engineers, building managers, property managers and energy educators

Within the Economic Sphere, he has a successful  history of creating and growing new ventures.  His business management experience includes COO of an consulting engineering business, CAO for an energy companies group , VP- Strategic Initiatives (Canada) for the Energy Services business of a large and successful Fortune 500 utility, with responsibilities that included M&A of Canadian and US operating and engineering companies, as well as implementation of new business initiatives.

Within the People Sphere, Gary has been working for over 25 years with individuals, corporations, and volunteer organizations to assist them in identifying and overcoming their barriers to success. He has worked closely with senior leadership to assess organizational performance and identify performance gaps, and put in place the processes and staff development programs to address these gaps.  He has worked as an executive coach and mentor with clients from both large and small business sectors, public sector agencies and government departments, as well as not-for-profit organizations. He has developed and facilitated team building processes and strategic planning for Fortune 500 business units. He has worked with hundreds of people in empowering and assisting them to reach their full potential, as well as giving motivational reflections to an audience base numbering in the hundreds of thousands.

In addition to Gary, Quest Leadership has built up an extensive international network of relationships and working partnerships with consultants, corporations, universities, colleges, authors and industry experts . Achievements

  • As a Partner / Owner and CAO of world-class fee-for-service Consulting Engineering and Energy Performance Contracting businesses, diversified, transformed and provided the infrastructure to grow the business from several million to over $30 million in revenues, as well as managing the sale of the business to a global energy services provider. Business was selected in 1996 and 1997 as one of Canada’s 100 most profitable companies.
  • Facilitated in-depth strategic planning that fueled the business transformation from consulting engineering to broad based energy and infrastructure services. Working with other owners to reposition and create a market niche, and operationalize strategies, the business was selected as one of Canada’s 50 Best Managed Private Companies in 1995, 96 and 97.  Continued with new owners to implement expansion through M&A.
  •  Participated in growth and expansion across Canada and managed Administrative and HR infrastructure growth to support this.  Managed the sale of the business to a global energy services company.  Involved in merger and acquisition activities in both the U.S. and Canada for Engineering and Operating companies.

  • Created HR strategy and led Organizational Development initiatives, and formation of culture for the business.  This included performance-based incentive systems, ESOP's, performance management systems, equity systems, implementing industry-leading and comprehensive benefits programs, staff education, mentoring and training programs.  In addition, provided staff counseling, coaching, as well as culture formation.

  • Applied his counseling training and skills both in working individually with company staff, designing and delivering of customized planning and personal retreats and providing one-on-one counseling. 

  • Provided experienced and detailed analysis of business requirements, costs, process effectiveness and improvements, design and implementation of performance management systems and HR infrastructure, development and review of energy monitoring and verification units, detailed review of engineering simulations.

  • Pioneered new lines of business and created information, software services, and education services departments (and service offerings) within the company.  Designed and implemented custom performance management systems for the businesses.  This required the development of online systems on multiple platforms, negotiation of development and distribution agreement with U.S. software firms, co-development and marketing / support of industry-standard PC based systems

  • Delivered skilled and persuasive presentations in support of sales efforts with clients, and at conferences.  Designed, developed and delivered comprehensive training workshops in topics ranging from advanced engineering simulation to personal mission and values leadership.

Providing curricula design and teaching experience, and energy and environmental related strategic initiatives advice to clients of the Centre for the Built Environment.

Professor, Centre for the Built Environment, Faculty of Applied Science and Technology, with teaching responsibilities in both the Civil Engineering Technology and the Buildings Systems Engineering Technology Schools

*   Development and delivery of Energy and Environmental curricula students of the Building Systems Engineering Technology and Civil Engineering Technology programs;

*   Providing energy and training related strategic initiatives advice to clients of the Centre for the Built Environment

*   International guest lecturing in issues related to the environment, business management and social justice.

Providing business and strategic management advice, executive development and coaching, and sustainability consulting to international clients on a private practice basis.

*   Strategic business management services including business planning, market analysis and review, and strategic  planning.

*   Providing one-on-one executive coaching including in depth personal analysis and support;

Providing senior management support for business growth through enabling infrastructures and strategic business initiatives.

*   Operational management of Canadian administration ( finance, accounting, IT, corporate support, HR) along  with coordination of these activities with the U.S. head office

*   Merger and Acquisition activities in both the U.S. and Canada for engineering and operating firms – as well as managing the acquisition of Canadian businesses;

Providing strategic corporate management and enabling infrastructure to an expanding and diversifying business enterprise. 

*   responsible for finance and accounting, information systems and technology, human resources,  business administration, contracts & legal services.

*   development of comprehensive IT based tools to create sustainable competitive advantage

*   created and implemented HR policies and culture strategies to support rapid growth

*   managed details related to the sale of our company to a large U.S. utility in 1998, including interfacing with the investment banking firm, preparation of strategic and other documentation, preparation for, and management of the due diligence process, and review of contracts.

As partner/owner, provided corporate strategic business management, as well as operating the fee-for-service consulting engineering business.

*   responsible for the fee for service engineering consulting services provided by the company. It is worth noting that the company has earned over 20 significant technical awards including two international ASHRAE awards for technology and energy

*   P&L responsibility  including all operations, sales & marketing, administration, and delivery of services.

*   Participation on selected projects as senior consultant.

 

 Manager, Education Services,  Engineering Interface Limited,  Toronto, Ontario 1986 – 1990

Created and implemented a new service function within the business, and expanded the role of training and education services within our client offerings.

*   designed and delivered training programs in energy management to engineers, building managers, property managers and energy educators.

*   created multimedia computer based training in building equipment operation and maintenance. 

*   designed and delivered training programs for the Federal and Provincial governments and for utilities, as well as management and leadership development programs for clients.

  

Manager, Information Services Engineering Interface Limited,  Toronto, Ontario  1983 – 1986

Developed and implemented information infrastructures to meet client needs and strategic business initiatives.

*   managed the development of a number of mainframe and PC based energy accounting systems.  (clients included dozens of school boards, universities, colleges, commercial property management firms, retailers, utilities, and energy service companies as well as provincial governments, the Department of National Defense, and the federal government.)

*   provided creative and strategic input into the development of the FASER energy accounting system, which became the de-facto standard in North America.

*   frequent speaker on topics related to advanced energy simulation, energy monitoring and energy accounting

Gary is a member of  IEEE ( Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers) ,  ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers),  OACETT (Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists), MERITUS, and is a LEED™ Certified Professional.
